Bigger & Better – The Third Inter-city Invitational Chess Tournament!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]South Mumbai Chess Academy’s 3rd Inter-city Invitational Chess Tournament was held on the 1st of November 2020. The tournament was a team championship with participants between FIDE ELO Rating of 1000-1500 Points. The third edition of the tournament had a total of 11 teams participating in it. The tournament was held in two pools, A & B. The winners of each pool then competed in a tie-breaker and the winner was announced. All the participants were connected throughout the tournament through a Zoom video call to ensure fair gameplay.

The participating Academies were:

Maestro Chess Academy(MCA) – Hyderabad, Team A, B & C: Maestro Chess Academy is headed by FIDE Instructor Amithpal Singh. Coach Amithpal has been teaching chess for 20+ years. MCA has groomed budding champions and shaped their chess careers since 2013. They participated in the last 2 edition of the tournament as well. This time they sent in 3 teams for the tournament.

Mastermind Chess Academy (MMCA) – Chennai: Mastermind Chess Academy is headed by Senior Coach & FIDE Arbiter C Natarajan. MMCA has produced many rated players in it’s the lifespan of over 20+ years.

Matrix Chess Academy/Club, Delhi, Gurgaon – Tripura: Matrix Chess Academy is founded & headed by FIDE Trainer Prasenjit Dutta. Matrix has been a chess pioneer in north India since the foundation. They have produced many world-class players. Matrix has been consistently sending 4 teams for the tournament.

South Mumbai Chess Academy (SMCA) – Mumbai & Rajahmundry: South Mumbai Chess Academy has been founded by FIDE Trainer Balaji Guttula & FIDE Rated Player Nagesh Guttula. SMCA has been imparting chess coaching to its students since 1996. Having produced National & International Champions and Rated players over the years.

Solapur Chess Academy(SCA) – Solapur: Solapur Chess Academy has been founded by FIDE Rated Chess Players Prashant Gangji & Sumukh Gaikwad in the year 2004 in Solapur. It is one of the biggest chess academies in Solapur. SCA has since produced many champions in the past 14 years of its operations.

A total of 101 players participated in the tournament that took place on 1st November 2020.

The final standings of Pool-A are as follows (Average points of Top 6 players considered from each team):
  • Matrix Chess Academy, Delhi – 25.5 Points
  • Mastermind Chess Academy, Chennai – 24 Points
  • Matrix Chess Academy, Gurgaon – 17.5 Points
  • Maestro Chess Academy, Hyderabad Team A – 17 Points
  • South Mumbai Chess Academy, Mumbai – 17 Points
The final standings of Pool-B are as follows 9Average points of Top 6 players considered from each team):
  • Solapur Chess Academy – 25.5 Points
  • South Mumbai Chess Academy, Rajahmundry – 22 Points
  • Matrix Chess Academy, Agartala – 20 Points
  • Maestro Chess Academy, Hyderabad Team B – 14.5 Points
  • Matrix Club – 13 Points
  • Maestro Chess Academy, Hyderabad Team C – 9 Points

The tie-breaker was held between the winners of each Pool and Team Matrix Chess Academy, Delhi was deemed the winner.
